This game was actually SMB2 in Japan, and then released in the U.S. in Super Mario All Stars, a collection of SMB, SMB2, SMB3, SMW, and the lost levels. A walkthrough from world one to eight

Note: worlds 9 and A-D are not included, because they are just bonus levels.
This symbol: ? means that there is a infinite life opportunity and that you if you don’t know how to do it, look for an online guide.

Level 1.1
Type: Ground?
Time: 400
Difficulty: 3/10
This level is much like the first level of Super Mario Bros., but watch out for the new purple mushrooms, they hurt you. Also, there is an infinite lives opportunity where the Koopa is walking on top of the 4 question marks in the beginning. ?There is a pipe and then 3 Goombas walking together, in the background there’s a tree. Go in front of it and jump straight up for a hidden 1-up. The rest of the level is pretty straightforward, you’ll figure it out.

Level 1.2
Type: Underground/Warpable
Time: 400
Difficulty: 3/10
Just like in SMB, this is a warpable level. Just jump left of the piranha where blue blocks form long, big steps, to the platform above the level. run across this and don’t fall near the end.

Level 1.3
Type: Trees
Time: 400
Difficulty: 5/10
The first tree level, and don’t ask because I don’t know what those flying squid-looking things are.

Level 1.4
Type: Castle
Time: 300
Difficulty: 5/10
This is a typical Mario Bros. castle, nothing too hard, but watch out for the green Koopas, which I don’t believe appeared in castles in SMB. Jump over the lava pits, and hit the ? for a power up. When you get to Bowser, just wait until he jumps, then run under him to get the lever.

Level 2.1
Type: Night/Ground w/ water
Time: 400
Difficulty: 5/10
Just run in the beginning and you’ll make it under all the flying Koopas. Hit the 2nd ? out of three for a power up. And later before the water there’re 3 blocks, the second is a star. There’s a pipe underneath a platform of ?’s which contains a bonus, this is difficult to get to though. Soon, there’s what I call an “oblivion springboard.” These springboards shoot you into the sky and bring you as far as possible for about 10 seconds, as long as you hold right on the control pad.

While using the spring board, stop in the air when you see a pipe with bricks around it, then stop and wait till you fall down. Hit the upper row of bricks and you’ll find a vine, climb it for a heaven bonus. Soon, there will be another springboard, use this until you see a platform, stop and wait for Mario to fall on it. Go to the rightmost block and jump for a 1-up mushroom.

Level 2.2
Type: Night/Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 6/10
This level may require some jumping practice. You'll reach a pipe with a Koopa and two bricks suspended above it. Hit the highest block for a power up, and then enter the pipe for a bonus. When you get inside the pipe, you'll notice that there are two coins missing from the top row, compared to the bottom row. Collect the first coin of the bottom row, and jump straight up to find a hidden coin block. Jump on top of it, and jump a little to the right to find another hidden coin block.

Jump on that coin block, and punch the leftmost brick for a power-up. But be careful, there's a hidden poisonous mushroom left of where the first hidden coin block is. Exit the bonus, and you'll notice a pipe in midair. Jump around, while on the ground, to find a hidden coin block. Jump on top of the coin block, and jump a little to the left to find a second hidden coin block. From there, jump on to the pipe in midair, and jump over the rest of the hole.

Level 2.3
Type: Night/Trees

Difficulty: 6/10
Watch out for the fishies! Avoiding them is not as hard as it looks. Though. Halfway through the stage there’s two ?’s, one of them is a power-up

Level 2.4
Type: Castle
Time: 300
Difficulty: 4/10
Just kill the green Koopa in the beginning and wait for the goombas to fall into the lava, or just kill them with the Koopa. Keep going until you come to a small staircase of Grey bricks. Go to the top step and jump up for a power up. Soon, you’ll come a to a seemingly hard section divided top and bottom, go bottom and sprint and it’s quite easy. When you get to Bowser, just wait until he jumps and run for it.

Level 3.1
Type: Snow/Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 4/10
Don’t go in the first pipe, because it’s a bonus that leads to a warp to level 1. There’s a row of three ?’s. one is a Power up. Continue right to a red Koopa flying vertically. Jump on it, and hopefully you’ll fly high enough to get a hidden 1-up. Near this, there’s a pipe separated by two gaps that is a bonus, if you want to go in here know the risks: It takes you back to the halfway point of the level.

Level 3.2
Type: Ocean
Time: 400
Difficulty 5/10
Remember that the squids cant touch you when your walking on the ground. Always try to stay near the top or bottom.

Level 3.3
Get a 1-up at the beginning by kicking the first Koopa into all the rest. Then, basically just keep running and jumping until you get to the end.

Level 3.4
Type: Castle

Difficulty: 3/10
This is the first maze level of SMB:LL. The correct way to go is as follows: run, don’t jump over the first gap to go under the big bunch of blocks for the first part of the maze, then go bottom again. Then go to the top, then top again. Level 4.1
Type: Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 6/10
First of all remember, from this point on the piranha’s don’t stop when your next to them. There’s a long strip of ?’s. the last one is a power up. You’ll see a red spring, go back a bit, then jump onto it and hold up as you jump to get across the water, this may take some practice. Then you’ll see Lakitu again, go to the highest block on the staircase and kill him.

Then go right against the staircase of blocks and jump up for a hidden 1-up. Continue and you’ll see three ?’s in a row, the third is a poison mushroom. Soon you’ll see a set of two ?’s, the second is a power-up. Continue and hit one of the ?’s under the suspended pipes for a power-up.

Level 4.2
Type: Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 7/10
Look for the ? between the bullet bill and get a power up. Then look for the star near the beginning and run for it. Continue and hit the red spring to put yourself on the long row of ?’s and kill the red Koopa. Soon you’ll find another long row of ?’s with a bullet bill underneath. The first is a mushroom, the last a poisonous one.

When you get to the hammer bros get real close to him and wait until he jumps and run under him. Soon there is an upper or a lower path, take the lower. Soon after this, there’s two pipes, and the first is a bonus. There is a power-up in one of the blocks that make the ceiling of the bonus. Look for some hidden blocks to get you there.

Level 4.3
Type: Trees
Time: 400
Difficulty: 9/10
Get a running start to get onto the platform with the spring, and then jump on the spring to get on the red platform. Continue to your right until you come to a single tree with a long gap, run and then jump, using the flying red Koopa to get you onto the next platform.

Continue and jump and the moving platform. Punch the ? for a power-up. When you come to the balance, jump on the first platform and wait until the second is high enough to get on the next tree top. Then use the red platform to reach the next tree. You’ll see another gap with flying Koopas, kill them both and then run and jump on the suspended blocks to finish the level.

Level 4.4
Type: Castle

Difficulty: 9/10
In the beginning you’ll see a large platform of ?’s. the third is a power-up. Watch out for the huge firebar. When you reach the hammer bros, go really close to him and wait for him to jump, then run under him. When you get to Bowser, watch for a pattern, and about a second before you anticipate a jump, run for it, if the fire bar allows.

Level 5.1
Type: Ice
Time: 400
Difficulty: 8/10
Continue right until you get to a pipe by itself, enter it for a bonus, and look for a power-up on the ceiling blocks. The wind starts to blow, this is the first time this happens in the game. Fall down onto the small piece of ground to the right of the staircase of blocks, and then jump straight up to find a hidden coin block. Jump on top of the coin block and jump again for a hidden 1-up. Get back on the platform and jump the long gaps using the wind.

Towards the end of the stage, when you reach two rows of bricks with a Red Koopa nearby, punch one of the bricks of the upper row to find a Vine; climb it to reach this Heaven Bonus. The Heaven Bonus will then take you to a Warp Zone that leads to World 6! When you get to end and you see a big wall, go three blocks from the end and jump up for a hidden block.

Level 5.2
Type: Underground/Warpable
Time: 400
Difficulty: 7/10
At the very beginning, go all the way to the left and jump up for a hidden power-up. When you see a long strip of ?’s, watch out, the second to last one is a poisonous mushroom.

Level 5.3
Type: Air/Trees
Time: 400
Difficulty: 9/10
Get off the red platform at the first tree, Then use the flying Koopas to get into the suspended pipe leading to a bonus. Soon, you’ll see another platform, stay on this until your close to the flying Koopa, and use it to get onto the platform. The rest is pretty easy.

Level 5.4
Type: Castle
Time: 300
Difficulty: 6/10
This may take some practice, but after about three tries you’ll have it to the point were you just need to run and jump for the first half of the level. This is one of the easiest castles. Again, wait until Bowser jumps then run under him.

Level 6.1
Type: Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 7/10
Punch the first brick until the first beetle for a power-up. When you get to the tall pipe, go up next to it and jump up for the hidden block. When you reach the long row of ?’s, hit the fourth one for a power-up. Continuing right, the wind will start to pick up, and you'll see a staircase of blocks with a pipe below. Jump on the first red platform, and drop down until it's possible for you to jump left to get to the pipe; enter the pipe to reach a secret water area. Inside the secret water area, swim your way past the squid and collect the coins along the way.

Level 6.2
Type: Water
Time: 400
Difficulty: 4/10
Again, just like every other water levels, stay close to the top or bottom and swim really fast.

Level 6.3
Type: Air
Time: 400
Difficulty: 6/10
Pretty much, just run for it. There are two power-ups you can get along the way: the first one requires you to jump on a Red Koopa in order to punch a ? block that contains a Power-Up. The second Power-Up is inside a suspended brick, a little past the halfway point of the stage.

Level 6.4

This castle is another maze, the correct way to go is as follows: BOTTOM TOP BOTTOM BOTTOM

Level 7.1
Type: Night Ground

Difficulty: 8/10
Use the Koopas to get into the suspended, tube then get into the bonus and come out in a different area. Keep going, and enter the pipe for another bonus, then pass the hammer bros. and your done.

Level 7.2
Type: Night Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 5/10
Get on the red platform. Hit the ? and get the power-up. Jump on top of both Red Koopa to reach the pipe that’s suspended; enter it to reach a bonus. Inside the bonus, punch the first ceiling-level brick for another power-up. Exit the bonus. Move right and watch out for the firebars.

Level 7.3
Type: Trees
Time: 400
Difficulty: 8/10
The whole stage is gaps. Jump on the first spring and throw yourself into the sky; the wind should have picked up, as well. While up in the sky, move right until finding another spring. Continue catapulting and landing on the springs. Along the way, drop down when you see a red platform with a ? nearby. Jump onto the red platform, and let it drop down so you can get to the ? and hit it for a power-up.

Level 7.4
Type: Castle

Difficulty: 8/10
Right before the set of red descending platforms is a hidden Power-Up. Also, this is one of the hardest Bowsers in the game. So wait until the time is perfect, then jump over the firebar and under Bowser.

Level 8.1
Type: Ground
Time: 400
Difficulty: 9/10
Move right, and punch the seventh ? for a power-up. When you get to the long gap, use the red flying Koopa to make it. Notice the patch of grass in the background between the two small bullet bill launchers? Stand on the left end of the grass, and jump straight up to find a hidden 1-UP. And remember, if your standing all the way on the left edge on the screen, the hammer bros. hammers can hurt you.

Level 8.2
Type: Ground/Heaven
Time: 400
Difficulty: 8/10
Move right, jump on the non-moving red platform, and punch the brick for a power-up. Continue right, and you'll notice the wind blowing. You'll also see a spring that you have to jump on in order to get past the blocks. Don't attempt to jump over the water when catapulting from the Red Jumping Board, and try to land on the blocks instead. Continue right, and you'll find a Red Koopa.

Time your jump carefully so that you land on the Red Koopa, punch the brick directly above it, and land safely on the ground to the right. The brick you punched should show a vine; climb it to reach a Heaven area.

Level 8.3
Type: Heaven
Time: 400
Difficulty: 10/10
Move right and defeat the Lakitu by stomping it. Continue right, jump on the spring, and catapult yourself on top of the Red Koopa, and then onto the red small platform. Continue right, and jump over the two approaching Hammer Bros; be careful, there are hidden poisonous mushrooms throughout this part, so watch where you jump. After the second Hammer Bros., you'll notice three blocks stacked on top of each other (before a gap with a pipe nearby). About six spaces left of the stack of three blocks is a hidden vine suspended in midair, so jump around that part to find it.

Two spaces left of where you found the hidden vine is a hidden Power-Up; so make sure you find that, too. Climb the vine to get a heaven bonus (if you got the hidden power-up after finding the vine, the vine will turn invisible--this is normal, you can still climb the Vine). Go through the heaven bonus, and drop back down to the main stage. Continue right to find a spring with an extremely long gap ahead. Scroll the screen right so that you can see two Red Koopas. Run and jump onto the spring, and catapult yourself onto the Red Koopas to land safely on the next cloud platform. Run jump over the next two approaching hammer bros, and you'll reach a very long gap with a pair of red platforms connected by string.

You can't reach the platforms from where you're standing, so you'll have to find another way to get there. Keep jumping up around this part (near the edge of the cloud platform you're standing on), until you find a hidden coin block and a hidden poisonous mushroom. You should now have two blocks suspended in midair available for you to jump on top of. While standing on the first block, run and jump onto the red platform. Stand on the red platform until the second one is fairly high. Jump on top of this red platform, and run and jump onto the platform made up of two blocks to reach the Flagpole, that wasn’t so bad, was it?

Level 8.4
Type: Castle
Time: 400
Difficulty: 10/10
Drop down to the lower level by jumping down and hitting left, and jump over the lava pit when the fire bar isn't rotating towards you. There's a hidden poisonous mushroom before the second lava pit suspended somewhere in midair, so be careful when jumping. Jump over the second lava pit when the fireball and fire bar aren't blocking your path. Jump on the Red Koopa as it rises up so you land on the platform of grey bricks above the first pipe. Enter the pipe under the platform of grey bricks to reach the water basement of the castle. The water basement is fairly easy, just swim past the squids and fire bars and enter the pipe at the end. When you come out of the next pipe, move two steps left and jump straight up to find a hidden power-up.

Enter the only other pipe shown on the screen by first facing left, and then jumping down to the pipe. Continue right, jump on top of the row of ?’s, and stomp the Squid to kill it. Continue right, and watch out for a hidden poisonous mushroom near the green Koopa. Get rid of the other Koopa’s that are hovering across the lava pit, and jump on top of the moving red platform that's in the lava pit. Jump on to the grey brick, and run (over the small lava pit, and under the other grey brick suspended in midair) and jump over the extended fire bar. You should hear a ding sound. Continue right through the long passage.

Jump on the Red Koopa, then the Green Koopa, to reach the pipe. There's a hidden power-up above the pipe, so jump above it to find it. Enter the pipe, and move right to face a fake Bowser. Get close to him so his hammers won't touch you, and just run underneath him when he jumps up. Continue right to face the real Bowser.
