General profile

Mallow, known in Japan as Maro (マロ), is the lost Cloud Prince of Nimbus Land and one of the four core party members of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996). Introduced as a soft, pillow-like, cloud-creature with a fluffy white body, a yellow tuft of curled hair, big expressive eyes, and a permanently sniffly disposition, Mallow is one of the most endearing characters in the entire Mario series. His emotional vulnerability — he literally cries raindrops when sad, with the in-game weather effect of his crying producing actual rainfall — makes him the heart of the SMRPG party.

Mallow’s core character arc is a coming-of-age identity-discovery story. Raised from infancy by Frogfucius, an elderly frog scholar in Tadpole Pond, Mallow believed himself to be an adopted frog despite his obvious physical differences from the species. The SMRPG plot reveals his true origin: he is the heir to the throne of Nimbus Land, the cloud-kingdom ruled by King and Queen Nimbus. The reveal scene — in which Mallow meets his biological parents for the first time and learns his true heritage — is widely considered one of the most emotional cutscenes in 16-bit-era Mario series storytelling.

Mallow’s gameplay role in SMRPG is as a magical-attacks specialist. His combat abilities centre on weather-themed magic: Thunderbolt (electrical area attack), Snowy (ice-based area attack), Star Rain (a single-target magic attack), HP Rain (a party-healing rain spell), and Psychopath (a special move that reveals enemies’ thoughts and weaknesses). His timed-hit mechanic for magical attacks makes him one of the most strategically rewarding party members. His role complements Mario’s physical attacks, Geno’s starlight magic, Princess Toadstool’s healing, and Bowser’s heavy-hitter combat.

Quotes

"Waah! I lost my coin! Mario, help meeee!" — Mallow, introduction scene, Super Mario RPG
"I’m… a tadpole, right? At least Frogfucius says so…" — Mallow, Super Mario RPG
"You’re my parents? I have parents?" — Mallow, Nimbus Land reveal scene, Super Mario RPG
"Thunderbolt!" — Mallow, attack vocalization, Super Mario RPG

Enemies

Mallow’s primary enemy is Smithy, the mechanical-weapon villain who breaks the Star Road and threatens the Mushroom Kingdom and Nimbus Land alike. The Smithy Gang — including Mack, Belome, Bowyer, Yaridovich, Czar Dragon, and the various boss creatures encountered through the SMRPG adventure — oppose Mallow across the game. He also briefly opposes Croco (a recurring crocodile thief) and Booster (the eccentric millionaire who attempts to marry Princess Toadstool). His true homeworld of Nimbus Land has been seized by Valentina and Dodo — the usurpers occupying the cloud-kingdom throne in Mallow’s absence.

Friends

Mallow’s closest companions are his SMRPG party members: Mario (his rescuer from his initial pickpocketing crisis), Geno (the star spirit possessing the wooden doll), Princess Toadstool (who insists on adventuring with the party rather than waiting to be rescued), and Bowser (the King of the Koopa Troop temporarily allied against Smithy). Beyond his party, Mallow’s closest adoptive father is Frogfucius, the elderly frog scholar who raised him in Tadpole Pond. His biological parents are King and Queen Nimbus, the rulers of Nimbus Land cloud-kingdom. He has warm relations with the Tadpole Pond frog community and the Nimbus Land cloud-citizens.

Appearances

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES, 1996)

Mallow in Super Mario RPG SNESMallow debuted in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo (March 1996, Japan; May 1996, North America), the result of a co-development partnership between Nintendo and Square. He is the first party member Mario meets in the game — after being pickpocketed by Croco in the Mushroom Kingdom marketplace, Mallow tearfully turns to Mario for help. The introduction scene establishes Mallow as the emotional heart of the party and sets up the friendship-building tone that defines SMRPG’s narrative voice.

Nimbus Land and Mallow’s heritage reveal (1996)

Mallow fighting Croco in Super Mario RPGMallow’s identity-discovery arc reaches its climax when the SMRPG party arrives at Nimbus Land — the cloud-kingdom ruled by Valentina and Dodo, who have usurped the throne in the absence of the missing royal heir. The party defeats the usurpers and Mallow meets King and Queen Nimbus for the first time, learning that he is their biological son and the rightful heir to the Nimbus Land throne. The scene is widely considered one of the most emotional moments in 16-bit-era Mario series storytelling.

Super Mario RPG Switch Remake (2023)

Mallow in Super Mario RPG Switch remakeMallow returned to mainline Mario series gaming in the Super Mario RPG Switch remake (November 2023), developed by ArtePiazza. The remake faithfully recreates the original 1996 game with updated 3D graphics, modernised combat mechanics including new "Triple Move" party-combination attacks, and a re-orchestrated soundtrack. Mallow’s role is unchanged from the original, but the expanded cutscene animation gives his emotional scenes — particularly the Nimbus Land reveal and the ending farewell — significantly more dramatic weight than the original 1996 game.

Triple Move Combinations in the 2023 Remake

Combinations including Mario+Mallow+Bowser (Clown Car Barrage) and Mario+Mallow+Peach (Healing Rainbow) showcase Mallow’s magical-attacks specialty alongside other party members. The Triple Move system was one of the most-praised additions to the remake.

Concept Development (1995-1996)

Mallow concept artwork Super Mario RPGMallow’s character design was developed during the 1995-1996 SMRPG development cycle by Square’s art team in collaboration with Nintendo. Early concept art shows him as a more frog-like character with a cloud-coloured body, before his final design settled on the pillow-like cloud-creature appearance. The character’s adopted-frog backstory remained constant across concept iterations.

Cameos and References

Mallow has been referenced in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA, 2003), Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020), and various Nintendo merchandise lines. He has not had a standalone game appearance outside of Super Mario RPG and its 2023 remake. The 2024 Tetris 99 collaboration event featured a Super Mario RPG-themed crossover including Mallow as a playable Tetris character pip.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Mallow was designed by Square’s art team for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996). Character art was led by Kazuyuki Kurashima, with concept design refinements by Yoshitaka Amano (the famed Final Fantasy series artist) and other Square artists.
  • The Japanese name Maro (マロ) is a softened diminutive form of "Marshmallow," reflecting the character’s pillow-like physical form. The Western name "Mallow" preserves the marshmallow-association.
  • Mallow’s tears literally cause rainfall in the SMRPG world — when he cries, the in-game weather effect produces actual precipitation. This is referenced in dialogue throughout the game and is one of the most distinctive character mechanics in the SMRPG cast.
  • Mallow’s adopted father Frogfucius is an elderly frog scholar (his name a play on "Confucius") who raised Mallow believing him to be a tadpole. The character’s ignorance of his own species — he believes he’s a frog despite being a cloud-creature — is one of SMRPG’s most beloved running jokes.
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Mallow as "the lost Cloud Prince of Nimbus Land, raised in Tadpole Pond by Frogfucius and reunited with his biological parents during the events of Super Mario RPG."
  • Mallow’s Nimbus Land heritage — making him the heir to a cloud-kingdom throne — means he is canonically royal. He is one of the few Mario series characters with a confirmed royal lineage beyond the Mushroom Kingdom’s Princess Peach and Princess Daisy.
  • The character’s "Psychopath" magic spell — a unique attack that reveals enemies’ thoughts and weaknesses by displaying their inner monologue in dialogue boxes — is widely considered one of the most innovative gameplay-storytelling mechanics in 16-bit-era RPGs. Many enemy "thoughts" revealed via Psychopath are comedic, providing characterisation for otherwise-generic enemies.
  • Super Mario RPG (1996) sold approximately 2.3 million copies on the SNES. The 2023 Switch remake sold over 3 million copies in its first six months, reintroducing Mallow to a much wider audience than the original 1996 game.
  • Yoko Shimomura composed Mallow’s character theme for the original 1996 SMRPG soundtrack. Shimomura returned to compose the re-orchestrated soundtrack for the 2023 Switch remake — including an expanded version of Mallow’s theme that incorporates new instrumentation while preserving the original 1996 melodic content.
  • Mallow’s in-game height is approximately 80 cm (~32 inches), making him one of the shorter Mario series party members. He stands at roughly half Mario’s height in both the original 1996 game and the 2023 Switch remake.
  • The Nimbus Land cloud-kingdom — Mallow’s biological home — was a deliberate creative reference by Square’s art team to traditional Japanese mythological depictions of cloud-dwelling deities (雲上, "Unjō"). The kingdom’s aesthetic combines Japanese mythological elements with Western fairy-tale princess-kingdom tropes.
  • Mallow has been featured in Nintendo official merchandise including a 2024 Super Mario RPG Funko Pop figure released to coincide with the 2023 Switch remake’s anniversary marketing push.
  • The character has not appeared in any Smash Bros. entry as either a fighter or Mii Fighter costume as of late 2025. Unlike Geno, who has a long-running Smash request campaign, Mallow has not become a major Smash community-requested character.
  • Mallow’s in-universe age has never been officially given. He is treated as "young" in the SMRPG narrative — a teenager or young-adult equivalent — but no specific age has been canonised.
  • Mallow has not been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) as of late 2025 pre-release marketing. The SMRPG party’s film-adaptation status remains one of the open questions for Illumination’s Super Mario film series.
  • The character’s ending farewell scene in SMRPG — in which Mallow chooses to remain in Nimbus Land with his newly-discovered biological family rather than return to the Mushroom Kingdom adventure — has been preserved unchanged in the 2023 Switch remake.
