General profile

Geno is a Star Spirit from Star Road who has descended to the Mushroom Kingdom to take possession of a small wooden marionette doll belonging to a Rose Town child named Gaz. Introduced in 1996’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo — the result of a co-development partnership between Nintendo and Square (then-publisher Squaresoft) — Geno occupies a special place in the Mario series mythology as one of the few characters to canonically possess a soul-having body. His appearance is distinctive: a small, blue-cloaked figure with a wooden marionette doll for a vessel, golden hair, a tall pointed wizard-style hat, and gold star-shaped accents on his clothing. His mannerisms are stoic, philosophical, and serious — a deliberate contrast to the more comedic tone of the rest of the SMRPG party.

Geno’s true Star Spirit name is "♥♪!?" — represented in the game as unpronounceable star-language characters. He adopts the name "Geno" after the wooden doll he possesses, whose name is engraved on its base. This identity-swap mechanic is one of the more clever character introductions in the SMRPG narrative: the player meets Gaz’s doll first as a static object, then encounters it animated by Geno’s spirit, before the spirit chooses to take the doll’s name as his own. The character was designed by Square’s art team in collaboration with Nintendo, with character art by Kazuyuki Kurashima.

Geno’s defining gameplay role is as a party member of Super Mario RPG’s seven-star adventure. He joins Mario’s party in Rose Town after the player encounters the wooden doll and helps the party rescue Princess Toadstool and save the Star Road from the Smithy Gang. His combat abilities centre on starlight magic: Geno Beam (a single-target laser), Geno Whirl (a single-target damage attack), Geno Boost (a party buff), and Geno Flash (his ultimate area-of-effect attack that does massive damage). His timed-hit mechanic — pressing the action button at the right moment during attack animations — is one of the most-praised gameplay innovations of the original SMRPG.

Quotes

"I have come from a place beyond the stars. My true name is ♥♪!? — but for you, Geno will do." — Geno, introduction, Super Mario RPG
"The Star Road has been broken. We must repair it." — Geno, Super Mario RPG
"Geno Beam!" — Geno, attack vocalization, Super Mario RPG
"The wishes of children are precious. I will protect them." — Geno, Super Mario RPG (Switch remake)
"My time here is brief. But our friendship is eternal." — Geno, ending cutscene, Super Mario RPG

Enemies

Geno’s primary enemy is Smithy, the mechanical-weapon-wielding villain who breaks the Star Road at the beginning of Super Mario RPG. Smithy’s gang — including Mack, Belome, Bowyer, Yaridovich, Punchinello, and the Czar Dragon — oppose Geno across the game. Geno’s mission to restore the Star Road and recover the seven scattered Star Pieces drives the entire SMRPG plot. He also opposes Bowser in the opening act of the game (before Bowser temporarily joins the party as an ally against the Smithy Gang).

Friends

Geno’s closest companions are his SMRPG party members: Mario (the protagonist), Mallow (the cloud prince also seeking his true identity), Princess Toadstool (the Mushroom Kingdom princess fighting alongside Mario rather than waiting to be rescued), and Bowser (the King of the Koopa Troop turned temporary ally). Beyond his party he has warm relations with the Star Spirits of Star Road, whose mission he came to the Mushroom Kingdom to complete. He is allied to the broader Mushroom Kingdom heroic cast and treats his time in Mario’s world with quiet gratitude.

Appearances

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES, 1996)

Geno in Super Mario RPG SNESGeno debuted in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo (March 1996, Japan; May 1996, North America), the result of a co-development partnership between Nintendo and Square. Directed by Chihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa, SMRPG was the first major Mario RPG and the first 3D-rendered Mario game (using pre-rendered sprite techniques). Geno joins Mario’s party in Rose Town after the player encounters Gaz’s doll. His introduction — in which he descends from Star Road in a beam of light and possesses the wooden marionette — is one of the most-cited cutscenes in 16-bit-era RPG history.

Geno’s Star Spirit form (1996)

Geno Star Spirit formGeno’s true form is a Star Spirit — a tiny, shooting-star-like being that descends from Star Road. The SMRPG game shows brief glimpses of his true form in cutscenes (notably his arrival and his departure), but the player primarily controls his doll-possessed form throughout the game. His Star Spirit form’s sprite is a small five-pointed star with a face. This dual-form characterisation has been one of the most-discussed aspects of his lore.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA, 2003)

Geno cameo in Mario and Luigi Superstar SagaGeno makes a brief but significant cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the Game Boy Advance (2003). He appears in one of the game’s minor scenes as a reference to Super Mario RPG’s legacy. This cameo confirmed that Geno is part of broader Mario series canon and not exclusive to the 1996 SMRPG title.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Mii Fighter costume (2021)

Geno Mii Gunner costume in Super Smash Bros. UltimateGeno was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch as a Mii Gunner costume in October 2021 — a long-anticipated "return" for the character after over 25 years of fan campaigns to include him as a playable Smash Bros. fighter. While not a full playable fighter, the Mii costume includes Geno’s distinctive visual design, his star-themed hat and cape, and an arrangement of his classic SMRPG theme music. The addition was widely celebrated as the long-awaited "Geno gets in" moment by the Smash community.

Super Mario RPG Switch Remake (2023)

Geno in Super Mario RPG Switch remakeGeno returned to mainline Mario series gaming in the Super Mario RPG Switch remake (November 2023), developed by ArtePiazza. The remake faithfully recreates the original 1996 game with updated 3D graphics, modernised gameplay refinements, and a re-orchestrated soundtrack by Yoko Shimomura (the original composer). Geno’s role is unchanged from the original, but his expanded animation set and improved cutscene presentation give him more emotional weight. The remake sold over 3 million copies in its first six months, reintroducing Geno to a much wider 2020s audience than the original 1996 game.

Other Cameos and References

Geno has been referenced in Paper Mario: The Origami King (Switch, 2020), Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch, 2024), and various Nintendo merchandise lines. The character has not had a standalone game appearance outside of Super Mario RPG and its 2023 remake. He is one of the most-merchandised non-mainline Mario characters of the Smash Bros. Ultimate era due to his Mii costume’s popularity.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Geno was designed by Square’s art team in collaboration with Nintendo for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996). Character art was led by Kazuyuki Kurashima.
  • The Japanese name Jīno (ジーノ) is a transliteration of "Geno" — the name engraved on the wooden marionette doll the Star Spirit chooses to inhabit. The character’s true Star Spirit name is "♥♪!?," rendered in-game as unpronounceable star-language symbols.
  • Geno’s long-running Smash Bros. fan campaign — to include him as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series — ran from approximately 2002 (when the first speculation about his Smash inclusion began) through to 2021 when he was finally added as a Mii Fighter costume. The 19-year campaign is considered one of the longest-running "character request" movements in Smash community history.
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (1996) was the result of a co-development partnership between Nintendo and Squaresoft (now Square Enix). The two companies’ corporate parting in the early 2000s made Geno’s licensing situation complex — he was effectively unavailable for Nintendo use during a 2000s–10s period due to character-rights issues. The 2023 remake confirms the licensing situation has been resolved.
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Geno as "a star spirit from the Star Road, possessing the wooden doll of a child named Gaz to participate in the Mushroom Kingdom’s adventures."
  • Geno is one of the few Mario series characters whose true physical form differs entirely from his playable form. The Star Spirit body is what he "really is"; the doll body is merely his vessel for interacting with the Mushroom Kingdom’s mortal realm.
  • The character’s signature attack "Geno Beam" (a single-target starlight laser) has been preserved across all of his appearances since 1996. The animation has been preserved unchanged in the 2023 SMRPG Switch remake.
  • Super Mario RPG (1996) sold approximately 2.3 million copies on the SNES — modest by Mario series standards but commercially successful for a co-developed RPG. Its critical acclaim led directly to Nintendo’s subsequent Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series.
  • Geno’s presence in the 2023 SMRPG Switch remake has been credited with reintroducing the character to a new generation of fans. The remake’s rendition of Geno has more expressive animation than the original 1996 sprite work due to the modernised 3D graphics.
  • The character’s timed-hit attack mechanic — pressing the action button at the right moment during attack animations to enhance damage — was one of the most innovative gameplay features of SMRPG (1996). This mechanic became a foundational element of subsequent Mario RPG series entries.
  • Yoko Shimomura composed the original SMRPG soundtrack (1996) including Geno’s character theme. Shimomura returned to compose the re-orchestrated soundtrack for the 2023 Switch remake — a rare instance of the original composer returning to remake their own work.
  • Geno’s Mii Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2021) was sold as part of a paid DLC bundle and includes his classic SMRPG theme music as an unlockable soundtrack option. The costume’s release was treated as a major Nintendo announcement and was teased weeks in advance of its launch.
  • The character has been featured in Nintendo official merchandise including a Geno Funko Pop figure released in 2024 to coincide with the 2023 SMRPG Switch remake’s anniversary marketing push.
  • Geno is one of the most-requested Mario series characters for inclusion in Super Smash Bros., regularly appearing near the top of fan-survey rankings since 2008. His 2021 Mii Fighter addition was widely viewed as a compromise solution to the long-running campaign.
  • The character has not been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) as of late 2025 pre-release marketing. Geno’s film-adaptation status remains one of the open questions for Illumination’s Super Mario film series.
  • Geno’s departure cutscene at the end of Super Mario RPG — in which he must return to Star Road, leaving the wooden doll behind — is widely considered one of the most emotional cutscenes in 16-bit-era Mario series storytelling. The 2023 remake preserves the cutscene with updated animation.
