General profile

Antasma, known in Japan as Antasuma (アンタスマ), is the principal antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the Nintendo 3DS (2013) and one of the most physically distinctive villains in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. A tall, ominous, bat-like being with sweeping purple-and-black wings, a sinister hooked nose, sharp white fangs, glowing red eyes, and a cowled robe, Antasma cuts an immediately threatening silhouette. He has two distinct forms across the game: a humanoid "cape form" he uses for villainous monologuing and a smaller "bat form" he assumes for combat and aerial mobility. The two forms are functionally one character with different physical manifestations.

Antasma’s motivation in Dream Team is the conquest of the Dream World and, through it, the conquest of the waking Mushroom Kingdom. His backstory establishes that he is the king of the Dream World — a parallel dimension that exists alongside the waking world and that the Pi’illo Island inhabitants traditionally guarded. He was imprisoned in the Dream Stone by the Pi’illo people centuries before the events of the game; the Pi’illo people’s subsequent disappearance freed him to re-emerge and continue his conquest. The plot has Antasma initially allied with Bowser — the two villains form a partnership of convenience to combine their respective realm-conquest schemes — before their alliance inevitably fractures in the game’s endgame.

Antasma’s combat abilities centre on dream-based magic. His attacks include shadow-projectiles, bat-swarm flight patterns, sleep-inducing fog, and reality-warping powers that allow him to invade the waking world from his Dream World domain. His Dream Team boss fights take place across both the waking world and the Dream World, with the climactic battle occurring in the Dream World realm where his powers are at their peak. His "Antasmaton" minion army — small bat-like creatures that serve as his foot soldiers — are regular enemies throughout the game’s Dream World sequences.

Quotes

"Kreeeeeh!" — Antasma, signature bat-screech vocalization, all appearances
"The Dream World is mine to rule!" — Antasma, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
"Bowser, we shall conquer the waking world together!" — Antasma to Bowser, Dream Team
"Kraaah! Your dreams shall be your prison!" — Antasma, boss confrontation, Dream Team
"The Pi’illo people are gone. Nothing can stop me now!" — Antasma, Dream Team

Enemies

Antasma’s primary enemies are Mario and Luigi, against whom he fights across the entire Dream Team plot. He also opposes Prince Dreambert (the Pi’illo Prince and Mario’s spirit-guide companion throughout the game), Princess Peach (whom he attempts to abduct), Toadsworth, the Pi’illo people (whom he had originally been imprisoned by), and the wider Mushroom Kingdom heroic cast. After his alliance with Bowser fractures in the endgame, Bowser also becomes a temporary enemy — with Antasma briefly fighting both the Mario Brothers and Bowser before his ultimate defeat.

Friends

Antasma’s only ally is Bowser, with whom he forms a partnership of convenience early in Dream Team’s plot. The two villains agree to combine their respective conquest schemes — Antasma’s Dream World takeover and Bowser’s Mushroom Kingdom kidnap of Princess Peach. The alliance is unstable from the outset: Antasma’s Dream-World-centric powers and Bowser’s waking-world physicality make them awkward partners. The partnership inevitably fractures in the game’s endgame when Antasma attempts to seize the Dream Stone for himself and Bowser turns against him in betrayal. Beyond Bowser, Antasma has no allies — his Antasmaton minions are essentially manufactured weapons rather than companions.

Appearances

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (3DS, 2013)

Antasma in Mario and Luigi Dream TeamAntasma debuted in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the Nintendo 3DS (July 2013, Japan; August 2013, North America), developed by AlphaDream. He is introduced in the game’s opening cinematic when the Mario Brothers and Princess Peach travel to Pi’illo Island for a holiday. Antasma’s emergence from the Dream Stone disrupts the holiday and kicks off the game’s plot. The character was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani.

Bat Form (2013)

Antasma in bat formAntasma’s bat form is his combat-mode physical manifestation. The form is smaller, faster, and aerial-mobile compared to his humanoid cape form, with batwing-flight patterns and a swarm-of-bats attack signature. Most of his boss fights see him alternating between cape form (for monologuing and exposition) and bat form (for combat). The dual-form mechanic gives him significantly more visual variety than typical Mario series boss enemies.

Princess Peach Abduction (2013)

Antasma abducting Princess PeachAntasma’s attempt to abduct Princess Peach in Dream Team is the inciting incident of the game’s plot. After he emerges from the Dream Stone, Antasma takes Princess Peach into the Dream World, forcing the Mario Brothers to learn to navigate the parallel dimension to rescue her. The abduction scene is one of the most cinematically dramatic moments of the 2013 game and establishes Antasma as a substantial villainous threat.

Alliance with Bowser (2013)

Antasma and Bowser alliance artworkAntasma’s alliance with Bowser is one of the most narratively-distinctive villain partnerships in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The two villains agree to combine their respective conquest schemes — with Antasma providing Dream World access and Bowser providing Mushroom Kingdom physical force. Promotional artwork for Dream Team deliberately emphasised this villain-team-up dynamic, marking the game’s "two main villains" tagline.

Final Boss Fight (2013)

Antasma final battleThe climactic Antasma boss fight occurs in the Dream World after his alliance with Bowser fractures. The fight has multiple phases: an initial bat-form skirmish, a humanoid-form magic-attack phase, and a final super-form transformation that gives him significantly enhanced powers. The boss fight is widely considered one of the most challenging in the Mario & Luigi RPG series and is one of the longest single-boss encounters in the franchise.

Cameos and References (2015–present)

Antasma has been referenced in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS, 2015) and in supplementary materials for Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch, 2024). He has not made any post-Dream Team playable appearance in any Mario series spin-off, Smash Bros. entry, or Mario Kart. His character remains thematically tied to the Dream Team game and has not been integrated into the broader Mario series spin-off canon.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Antasma was designed by AlphaDream’s character team led by Akira Otani for Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (2013). The character’s bat-like aesthetic was a deliberate creative choice to differentiate him from previous Mario & Luigi villains like Cackletta and Fawful.
  • The name "Antasma" combines "asthma" (a breathing condition associated with sleep difficulties) with the prefix "ant-" (meaning "against"), creating a wordplay reference to sleep-disturbance and the Dream World. The Japanese name Antasuma (アンタスマ) preserves the same pun.
  • Antasma is the only Mario & Luigi RPG series villain to have two distinct physical forms (cape and bat) that he can transform between at will. The dual-form mechanic gives him significantly more visual variety than typical Mario series boss enemies.
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Antasma as "the bat-king of the Dream World, principal antagonist of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team."
  • Antasma’s alliance with Bowser in Dream Team is one of the most narratively-significant villain partnerships in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The two characters’ contrasting personalities — Antasma’s theatrical solemnity versus Bowser’s brash physicality — create memorable dialogue exchanges throughout the game.
  • The Pi’illo people — the in-universe race that originally imprisoned Antasma in the Dream Stone — are a unique Dream Team-exclusive species. They have not appeared in any subsequent Mario series entry, making Antasma’s lore essentially self-contained within the 2013 game.
  • Antasma has no spoken dialogue across his appearances — his vocalizations consist entirely of bat-screeches (rendered in dialogue boxes as "kreeh!", "kraah!", and similar onomatopoeic representations). The character’s actual lines are delivered through text alone.
  • Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (2013) sold approximately 2.34 million copies worldwide. The game received critical acclaim for its dual-world Dream / Reality gameplay mechanic and is widely considered one of the high points of the Mario & Luigi RPG series.
  • The character has not appeared in any Smash Bros. entry as either a fighter, assist trophy, or Mii Fighter costume as of late 2025. Unlike Geno or potentially Fawful, Antasma has not been the subject of a major Smash community-request campaign.
  • Antasma’s "Dream Stone" — the artifact in which he had been imprisoned — is a unique Dream Team-exclusive plot device. The Stone has not been referenced in subsequent Mario & Luigi entries.
  • The Antasmaton minion army — small bat-like creatures that serve as Antasma’s foot soldiers — are encountered as regular enemies throughout the game’s Dream World sequences. They are functionally similar to Bowser’s Goomba army but with bat-themed aesthetics.
  • Antasma’s climactic boss fight is one of the longest single-boss encounters in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The fight has three distinct phases and can last over 20 minutes on standard difficulty.
  • AlphaDream, the studio behind Antasma’s creation, ceased operations in October 2019 — ending the Mario & Luigi RPG series development that had introduced Antasma. The series was subsequently revived by Acquire in 2024 with Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which has not re-introduced Antasma as of late 2025.
  • Antasma has not been confirmed to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) as of late 2025 pre-release marketing. The character’s film-adaptation status remains one of the open questions for Illumination’s Super Mario film series.
  • The character’s in-universe age is canonically established as "centuries old" — he had been imprisoned by the Pi’illo people for an unspecified number of centuries before his Dream Team emergence. He is significantly older than most Mario series antagonists.
  • Antasma’s defeat scene at the end of Dream Team — in which his physical form dissipates after being defeated in his Dream World stronghold — is one of the most dramatically-rendered villain-defeat cinematics in the Mario & Luigi RPG series.
