Super Mario Bros. Super Show Cartoon Episode 48 – Flatbush Koopa
Mario and his friends have finally driven King Koopa and his evil minions out of the Mushroom Kingdom. The citizens are now free, and Princess Toadstool can now reign in her castle again. For their deeds, the Mushroomers even throw a parade for Mario's group. Having saved the kingdom, Mario and Luigi are now ready to finally return to Brooklyn.
Arriving at a newly-discovered Warp Pipe, Princess Toadstool gives Mario and Luigi each a kiss, announcing that she is going to miss having them around, and begins to cry. Mario assures her that she should not worry, as he and Luigi can travel through the pipe to come and visit any time they want. Luigi then tells Mario that not having to deal with King Koopa any more will make their lives perfect as pasta. The thought of pasta reminds Mario of their mother's cooking, which prompts him to leap into the pipe, as Luigi follows and the Mushroom People bid them farewell.
The pipe warps Mario and Luigi into a Brooklyn sewer, where they emerge from a manhole. Back in Brooklyn, Mario and Luigi begin to admire the many local sights, including the tree that grows in Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge. Mario then points to the Statue of Liberty, but is baffled to see that it has taken on the appearance of King Koopa, which he dubs the "Statue of Kooperty".
Mario and Luigi turn around when they hear someone scolding a crook, and see a policeman chasing a Koopa Troopa who is holding a sack of money. The Koopa Troopa storms past Mario and Luigi, who are surprised to see it in Brooklyn. A second Koopa Troopa then sticks his leg out from behind the garbage can, causing the policeman to trip, and the two Koopa Troopas run off with the sack of money. Mario then concludes that King Koopa and his minions have undoubtedly invaded Brooklyn, and Luigi notes that King Koopa merely left the Mushroom Kingdom so that he could take over their hometown. Mario tells Luigi that they need to find and stop King Koopa, so they hail a taxi and tell the driver to follow the Koopa Troopas.
The taxi brings Mario and Luigi to Coney Island, where numerous Koopa Troopas are hanging out and riding on the rides. The cabbies then questions as to what an ugly, fat, reptile is doing with the Coney Island entrance sign, and Mario points out that it is King Koopa, who is replacing the sign with one that reads "Koopa Island". The cabbie then yells at King Koopa, and tells him to leave, but gets ignored. Mario then worries that King Koopa will change Brooklyn to Kooplyn, but Luigi assures him that not even King Koopa would be that mean. At that moment, they overhear King Koopa telling the Koopa Troopas to replace every sign that reads Brooklyn to Kooplyn. King Koopa then announces that once the signs have been changed, they will cross the Kooplyn Bridge, capture the rest of New York and make it "New Koopa".
Fed up with King Koopa's tyranny, the cabbie announces that he is going to find the police, but attracts the attention of King Koopa, who sees that Mario and Luigi have finally arrived, just as he planned. King Koopa orders his Koopa Troopas to capture the Mario Bros. for him, and they begin to give chase. The cabbie begins to leave, but assures Mario and Luigi that he will be back with the police in three minutes, and that he expects a triple tip. As he drives off, King Koopa uses his Koopa Scepter to transform the cabbie, as well his entire taxi, into a pile of bricks. Luigi begins to worry, because he figures that King Koopa has the power to turn everyone in Brooklyn into bricks. King Koopa announces that it is his intention, as he wants vengeance on Mario and Luigi for foiling his evil schemes in the past, and has decided to take it out on their hometown.
Trivia & Bloopers
- In the original version, before Mario and Luigi enter the taxi and when they decide whether to keep running, Mario speaks through Luigi's mouth. Both of these errors are corrected in the Brazilian Portuguese dub, with the latter instance also being corrected in the Latin American Spanish dub. The former instance is also partially corrected by changing Mario's voice to Luigi's voice, but still spoken as though it were coming from the former.
- Before Mario and Luigi enter the taxi, both Mario's and Luigi's eyes are blue, as the games would depict them.
- When a Koopa Troopa trips a policeman, the policeman's baton disappears when it hits the ground.
- When Luigi says that King Koopa is changing the Coney Island sign to "Koopa Island", a Koopa Troopa's snout is the same color as its body.
- The background used in several scenes in the Mushroom Land is nearly identical to the one used in the opening shot of "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em".
- The "tree that grows in Brooklyn" is a reference to the Betty Smith novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It may also be a joke about the lack of naturally growing vegetation in an urbanized place like Brooklyn.

Opera (Live Action Sketch)
Early one morning at Mario Brothers Plumbing, Mario and Luigi are asleep on separate ends of the couch; their snoring is pushing a vase back and forth across a nearby counter. Suddenly, the voice of an opera singer can be heard coming through the garbage chute, which in turn wakes up Mario and Luigi. Luigi questions as to what the sound might be, and Mario suggests a catfight. As the singing continues, the singer raises her voice and shatters a window upon striking a high note. Mario then recognizes the voice as that of Mrs. Gammliss, a would-be opera singer living in apartment 5C.
As Mrs. Gammliss continues with her off-key singing, Mario begins to panic about having to keep listening to her sing the entire opera, and asks Luigi as to what they should do. Luigi suggests that they should pray for intermission, but upon realizing that they have no choice but to keep listening to Mrs. Gammliss' horrendous singing, Luigi plugs his ears with his fingers.
At some point, Mario and Luigi put on earmuffs to shield themselves from Mrs. Gammliss' singing. Luigi then attempts to unclog a toilet by removing a plumber's slinky that had gotten stuck in the tank, but assures Mario that he is not quite finished. Reaching into the tank again, Luigi pulls out a dead fish, and laughs about how some people wonder why their toilets will not work after flushing bizarre objects.
Mrs. Gammliss' voice comes barreling down the garbage chute yet again, much to the displeasure of Mario, Luigi and the Ratagator. Fed up with Mrs. Gammliss' singing, Mario calls up to her through the garbage chute. Mrs. Gammliss then responds to Mario by singing, and he tells her to sing quieter, as he and Luigi cannot stand it. She apologizes, but goes on to explain that she needs to practice her singing, and accidentally shatters a glass that Luigi had been holding in the process. For breaking his glass, Luigi tells Mario to pick up some paper cups, and vows to kill Mrs. Gammliss.
Mario then comes up with an idea, and explains that if it does not work, they will have to move. Luigi asks if Australia is far enough, just as Mrs. Gammliss starts singing again. Singing in an operatic voice, Mario tells Mrs. Gamliss to stop practicing, explaining that their brains have turned to oatmeal, and that their ears are ringing. Mrs. Gammliss acknowledges Mario's qualms, and retorts that he will get shot in his leg. Mario and Luigi then decide to sing several high notes up to Mrs. Gammliss, which results in a crash coming from her apartment.
