General profile
The Koopa Troopa is one of the two most iconic enemy species in the Mario series, sharing top billing with the Goomba for “most-recognised Mario foot-soldier” status. Introduced in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. (where they appeared as the prototype “Shellcreeper” enemies) and refined into their definitive modern form for Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985), Koopa Troopas are bipedal turtle creatures roughly the size of Mario himself. Their visual silhouette is unmistakable: a yellow-skinned reptilian body with a hard domed shell on their back (most commonly green, with red as the most prominent variant), spiky shoes, expressive eyes, and a perpetually-cheerful or perpetually-determined facial expression depending on the specific design generation.
The Koopa Troopa’s defining gameplay role is as the more-sophisticated enemy archetype compared to the Goomba. Where Goombas are defeated by a single jump and immediately disappear, Koopa Troopas are knocked into their shells when jumped on, the shell can then be kicked as a projectile weapon, sliding across the level and defeating other enemies (and potentially Mario himself if it rebounds). This shell-kicking mechanic, introduced in Super Mario Bros. (1985), has been preserved unchanged across every mainline Mario series platformer and has become one of the most-iconic gameplay mechanics in video game history. The green-shelled and red-shelled variants have distinct behaviours: green Koopas walk off ledges blindly, while red Koopas are smart enough to turn around at edges.
Koopa Troopas’ broader place in Mario series lore is complex. Bowser himself is canonically a Koopa, specifically a King Koopa, making the Koopa Troopa species technically Bowser’s own kind. The Koopa Troop military hierarchy (rank-and-file Koopa Troopas, winged Paratroopas, hammer-wielding Hammer Bros., Magikoopa wizards, Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and Bowser himself) forms the most-structured villain organisation in the Mario series. However, the Paper Mario series and other RPG entries have consistently shown that good-aligned Koopa Troopa communities (Koopa Village in the original Paper Mario, the Koopa coastal community in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door) exist outside Bowser’s direct authority. Notable individual Koopas, Kooper (Paper Mario, 2000), Koops (TTYD, 2004), Koopa the Quick, Parakarry, have served as Mario’s allies and party members.
Quotes
Enemies
The Koopa Troopa species’ primary enemies are Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, the Toad Brigade, and the wider Mushroom Kingdom heroic cast. As the rank-and-file foot soldiers of Bowser’s Koopa Troop, Koopa Troopas oppose essentially every protagonist character in the Mario series. They are defeated by jumping (knocking them into their shells), shell-kicks (the species’ own shells used as projectile weapons), fire flowers, star power-ups, and various other standard Mario combat mechanics. In Mario and Luigi RPG series, Koopa Troopa enemies are encountered as turn-based combat opponents with modestly stronger statistics than Goombas but still in the rank-and-file tier.
Friends
Koopa Troopas’ loyalties vary by individual and community. The mainstream Koopa Troop hierarchy serves Bowser directly, with the species as a whole providing the rank-and-file foot soldiers of his military. However, several Koopa Troopa communities have remained outside Bowser’s direct authority: Koopa Village (in the original Paper Mario, 2000), Petalburg (the Koopa coastal community in Paper Mario: TTYD, 2004), and various other peaceful settlements. Notable good-aligned individual Koopas include Kooper (Mario’s shell-throwing Tattle expert in Paper Mario), Koops (Mario’s shell-throwing party member in TTYD), Koopa the Quick (a friendly racer in Super Mario 64), and Parakarry (Mario’s mailman ally in Paper Mario).
Appearances
Mario Bros. (Arcade, 1983) as Shellcreeper
The Koopa Troopa species first appeared in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. (developed by Nintendo R&D1 under Gunpei Yokoi) as the prototype “Shellcreeper” enemy. The Shellcreeper design was a simpler turtle-creature with a hard shell, but the core species concept (a turtle that can be flipped onto its back by hitting the floor it stands on) was established here. The 1983 Shellcreeper directly evolved into the 1985 Koopa Troopa design.
Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985)
The Koopa Troopa was redesigned and re-named for Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (September 1985, Japan; October 1985, North America). The character was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka of Nintendo R&D4 as one of the original SMB enemy roster alongside the newly-created Goomba. The shell-kicking mechanic that defines the species was introduced in this game and has been preserved unchanged across every subsequent mainline Mario series platformer.
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007)
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007) gave the Koopa Troopa species its modern 3D character model, with significantly more detailed shell texturing, anatomical refinement, and animation polish than the previous generation 3D appearances. The Galaxy-era Koopa Troopa design has remained essentially the canonical visual reference for 3D Mario series appearances through the modern Switch and Switch 2 era.
Paper Mario series (2000-present)
The Paper Mario series has consistently featured Koopa Troopas as both standard enemies and as substantive party members. The original Paper Mario (Nintendo 64, 2000) introduced Kooper, Mario’s Koopa Troopa party member who uses his shell as a projectile weapon. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube, 2004) introduced Koops, the shy young Koopa from Petalburg who serves as Mario’s shell-throwing partner. The 2024 Switch remake of TTYD reintroduced Koops to a new generation of fans.
Mario Kart series (1992-present)
Koopa Troopas have been a default playable character in nearly every Mario Kart entry since Super Mario Kart (SNES, 1992). The species is classified as a Lightweight racer with high acceleration and handling, the typical stat profile for small-class Mario Kart drivers. In Mario Kart Tour (mobile, 2019-2025), multiple Koopa Troopa colour variants (green, red, blue, yellow) appear as separate playable characters. Mario Kart World (Switch 2, 2025) continues the Koopa Troopa’s playable roster status.
Mario Party / Sports series

Koopa Troopas have been recurring playable characters in the Mario Party series, the Mario Tennis series, the Mario Strikers series, and other Mario sports spin-offs. In Mario Party 10 (Wii U, 2015) and subsequent entries, Koopa Troopa is a default character with the standard Lightweight stat profile. The Mario Strikers series features Koopa Troopas as sidekick characters who can be assigned to player team captains.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch, 2023)
The standard Koopa Troopa returned in Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Switch (October 2023) with subtle visual refinements. The game also introduced the Rolla Koopa, a new species variant that rolls in their shells across the level with significantly increased speed. The species’ role as the game’s recurring rank-and-file enemy was preserved alongside several Wonder Effect transformations that gave standard Koopa Troopas altered behaviour patterns.
Trivia & Official Sources
- The Koopa Troopa’s predecessor, the Shellcreeper, was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi for the 1983 Mario Bros. arcade game. The Shellcreeper was re-imagined into the modern Koopa Troopa design for Super Mario Bros. (1985).
- The Japanese name Nokonoko is onomatopoeic for the sound of a slow-walking creature. The Western name “Koopa Troopa” combines “Koopa” (the species’ royal-name reference, applied to Bowser as King Koopa) with “Troopa” (a deliberately-misspelled version of “trooper” reflecting the species’ rank-and-file foot-soldier status).
- Bowser is canonically a Koopa, specifically a “King Koopa.” This makes the Koopa Troopa species technically Bowser’s own kind, the entire Koopa Troop military hierarchy is built on Bowser’s species-leadership of the broader Koopa community.
- The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes the Koopa Troopa as “the second-most-numerous enemy species in the Mario series, rank-and-file foot soldiers of Bowser’s Koopa Troop military hierarchy.”
- Green-shelled and red-shelled Koopa Troopas have distinct behaviours in mainline Mario series platformers: green Koopas walk off ledges blindly, while red Koopas turn around at edges. The behaviour distinction has been preserved across every mainline Mario series entry since Super Mario Bros. (1985).
- The shell-kicking mechanic, where Mario can knock a Koopa Troopa into its shell and then kick the shell as a projectile weapon, is one of the most-iconic gameplay mechanics in video game history. The mechanic has influenced countless other platformer games’ design.
- Koopa Troopa variants in the Mario series include Paratroopa (winged), Dry Bones (skeletal), Hammer Bros. (hammer-wielding), Boomerang Bros. (boomerang-wielding), Sledge Bros. (heavy-jumping), Magikoopas (spell-casting), Koopa Kid (the Mario Party recurring child character), and the Koopalings themselves.
- Notable good-aligned individual Koopa Troopas include Kooper (Paper Mario, 2000), Koops (Paper Mario: TTYD, 2004), Koopa the Quick (Super Mario 64, 1996), Parakarry (Paper Mario’s mailman ally), and various Koopa Village community members. Each of these characters has aligned with Mario rather than serving Bowser’s Koopa Troop.
- The Koopa Troopa has been a default playable character in nearly every Mario Kart entry since Super Mario Kart (SNES, 1992). The species is classified as a Lightweight racer across all Mario Kart entries.
- Koopa Troopa amiibo figures have not been released as standalone products. The species has been featured in background art of various Mario series amiibo line promotional materials.
- The Koopa Troopa’s shell colour variants in Mario Kart Tour (mobile, 2019-2025) include green (standard), red (faster), blue (slower but more durable), and yellow (special event-exclusive). The colour-variant system gave the Koopa Troopa more playable variants than any other character in the game.
- The Koopa Troopa’s “Troopa” suffix has occasionally been written as “Trooper” in early Nintendo of America materials, but the standardized “Troopa” spelling has been canonical since the late 1980s.
- The species has been continuously present in the Mario series for over 40 years, making the Koopa Troopa one of the longest-tenured Mario series enemy types. Only the Goomba (1985) and a small number of other early-era enemies have similar continuous-presence histories.
- The Koopa Troopa appears in The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) and is confirmed to return in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026). The species’ film appearances have included multiple shell-kick action sequences that pay homage to the iconic 1985 gameplay mechanic.
- Koopa Troopa designs across the broader Mario series include the Paper Mario flat-paper Koopa, the Yoshi‘s Woolly World yarn-and-felt Koopa, the Super Mario Maker pixel-art Koopa, and the modern 3D Koopa. Each preserves the species’ iconic shell-on-back silhouette across multiple art styles.
- The Koopa species’ biological structure, a soft-bodied turtle with a removable hard shell, has been canonised in supplementary Mario series materials. Koopa Troopas can survive being removed from their shells (notably depicted in early Super Mario Bros. animated television series) but are physically vulnerable in their shell-less state.
