General profile

Polterpup, sometimes affectionately known to fans as "Spooky" or "Ghost Dog," is Luigi’s ghostly canine companion and one of the most beloved supporting characters in the modern Mario series. Introduced in 2013’s Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon for the Nintendo 3DS, Polterpup is a small, semi-transparent, light-purple-tinted ghost dog with floppy ears, expressive eyes, and a wagging tail. Despite being a ghost, his personality is entirely that of a loving, energetic, slightly mischievous puppy — a deliberate creative choice by Next Level Games’ character team that subverts the "all ghosts are scary" conceit of the Luigi’s Mansion series.

Polterpup’s defining role is as Luigi’s loyal sidekick across the Luigi’s Mansion series. He first appears as an antagonistic ghost in Dark Moon’s early missions, repeatedly stealing equipment and mansion keys from Luigi to delay his progress. Over the course of the game his role gradually transforms from antagonist to ally, culminating in the famous ending sequence where Polterpup permanently joins Luigi’s side. By Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) he is an established member of Luigi’s household and serves as one of the game’s most important supporting characters — saving Luigi’s life multiple times throughout the adventure.

The character has become a fan-favourite mascot of the Luigi’s Mansion series, frequently featured in promotional artwork, amiibo line-ups, and Nintendo holiday marketing. His combination of ghost-mechanics and irresistibly cute puppy-personality has made him one of the most-merchandised supporting characters in the modern Mario era. Polterpup-themed plush toys, keychains, and figures have been continuously available through Nintendo’s official merchandise channels since 2014.

"Yip! Yip!" — Polterpup, signature bark, all appearances
"Aroo! Aroo-roo!" — Polterpup, excited vocalization, Luigi’s Mansion 3
"Whimper… whimper…" — Polterpup, scared response, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon
"Wag! Wag! Wag!" — Polterpup tail-wagging animation cue, Luigi’s Mansion 3
"Lick! Lick!" — Polterpup wake-up animation, Luigi’s Mansion 3DS remake

Enemies

Polterpup has no personal enemies beyond the general Luigi’s Mansion villain roster. As Luigi’s loyal companion he is fundamentally opposed to King Boo (Luigi’s arch-nemesis), Hellen Gravely, and the various boss ghosts of the Luigi’s Mansion series. In Luigi’s Mansion 3 his protective instincts drive several plot moments — he intervenes to save Luigi from boss-ghost attacks, retrieves dropped equipment, and barks warnings about incoming threats. He treats regular ghosts — the rank-and-file Greenies and Slammers — with playful curiosity rather than hostility.

Friends

Polterpup’s closest companion is Luigi, who treats him with the deep affection one would give a beloved family pet. The relationship has the visual and emotional dynamic of an owner-and-puppy bond, with Polterpup occupying the same household-pet role that the Toad species occupies in Princess Peach’s castle. Beyond Luigi he has warm relations with Professor E. Gadd (who frequently studies him for ghost-research purposes), Mario, Princess Peach, and the wider Mushroom Kingdom heroic cast. He gets along particularly well with the Toad Brigade members — the Toads who help Luigi throughout the Luigi’s Mansion 3 hotel adventure.

Appearances

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS, 2013)

He initially serves as an obstacle character, stealing equipment, mansion keys, and Dark Moon shards from Luigi to delay his progress. The character was designed by Next Level Games’ character team in Vancouver as part of the studio’s broader expansion of the Luigi’s Mansion ghost cast. Over the course of Dark Moon’s six mansions, Polterpup’s role gradually shifts from antagonist to ambivalent figure to ally — culminating in the famous ending cinematic.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon ending sequence (2013)

Polterpup ending sequence Luigi's Mansion Dark MoonThe famous ending cinematic of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon shows Polterpup permanently joining Luigi’s side after the King Boo confrontation. The sequence has Polterpup leap into Luigi’s arms, lick his face, and become his permanent companion — a deliberate creative inversion of the "Luigi-versus-ghosts" series premise. The scene became one of the most-discussed character moments in the Mario series during the 2013 release window and established Polterpup as a permanent fan-favourite.

Luigi’s Mansion 3DS Remake (2018)

Polterpup in Luigi's Mansion 3DS remakeThe 2018 Nintendo 3DS remake of Luigi’s Mansion (originally 2001 GameCube) retroactively added Polterpup to the game. In the remake he appears in the opening cutscene as Luigi’s travelling companion to the original game’s mansion. The retroactive addition was Nintendo’s deliberate move to maintain Polterpup’s presence across the entire Luigi’s Mansion timeline rather than only the post-Dark Moon entries.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Switch, 2019)

Polterpup and Luigi in Luigi's Mansion 3 interiorPolterpup has his most substantial role in Luigi’s Mansion 3 for Nintendo Switch (October 2019). He accompanies Luigi to the Last Resort Hotel and serves as a crucial gameplay assistant: he digs up hidden treasures, guides Luigi to secrets, retrieves dropped equipment, and — most importantly — saves Luigi’s life by dragging him out of life-threatening situations on multiple occasions. Polterpup is a key character in the game’s emotional climax, where he plays a pivotal role in the final King Boo confrontation. His inclusion was widely praised by reviewers as one of the standout characterisations of the game.

ScareScraper Multiplayer Mode (2013–present)

Polterpup in Luigi's Mansion ScareScraperPolterpup appears in the ScareScraper online multiplayer mode of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (2013) and Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019). In ScareScraper mode he serves as a helpful sidekick character that other player-controlled Luigis can interact with for healing and equipment-finding. The mode’s online-coop nature made Polterpup the most-encountered Luigi’s Mansion supporting character across the series’ multiplayer scenes.

Other Appearances and Cameos

Polterpup has appeared as a trophy and Spirit character in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U (2014) and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch, 2018), confirming his canon status within the broader Mario series rather than only the Luigi’s Mansion sub-series. He also features in promotional artwork for the Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD remaster (June 2024) and is included in the Nintendo Switch Online Sticker Service as one of the available Luigi’s Mansion themed stickers.

Princess Peach: Showtime! (2024)

Polterpup makes a brief cameo appearance in Princess Peach: Showtime! for Nintendo Switch (March 2024) as a Sparkle Theater audience member during one of the game’s theatre-themed cutscenes. The cameo was a deliberate Easter egg for Luigi’s Mansion fans.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Polterpup was designed by Next Level Games’ character team in Vancouver for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (2013). The character’s appearance was based on a combination of small terrier and beagle-breed canine references, with the ghost-aesthetic applied through translucent texturing.
  • The Japanese name Obake-Pitchi (オバケピッチ) combines "obake" (お化け, "ghost") with "pitchi" (ピッチ, the Japanese baby-talk for "dog"). The Western name "Polterpup" was created for the 2013 Dark Moon localisation by Nintendo of America’s Treehouse team — a play on "poltergeist" combined with "pup."
  • Polterpup is one of the few non-Toad supporting characters in the modern Mario series to have made the transition from antagonist to ally within a single game. His characterisation arc across Dark Moon is widely cited as one of the most well-executed character transformations in the Mario series.
  • The character has no spoken dialogue across any of his appearances — his vocalizations consist entirely of barks, whimpers, yips, and the occasional lick sound effect. Nintendo studio staff have provided the wordless vocalizations across the series.
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Polterpup as "Luigi’s loyal ghostly companion and the first friendly ghost in the Luigi’s Mansion series."
  • Polterpup amiibo figures have not been released as of late 2025 as a standalone product, despite ongoing fan campaigns. The character was included in promotional artwork for the Luigi’s Mansion 3 amiibo line but received no figure of his own.
  • The character’s role in Luigi’s Mansion 3 (2019) was significantly expanded from Dark Moon. He has dedicated cinematics, gameplay-assist mechanics, and an emotional arc that runs across the entire 15-floor hotel adventure. Director Bryce Holliday has called Polterpup "the heart of Luigi’s Mansion 3."
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3’s Polterpup digging-mechanic — where the dog finds hidden treasure spots throughout the hotel — became one of the most-praised gameplay-progression features in the game. Players collect treasure shadows that Polterpup digs up across the entire campaign.
  • The character’s expressive facial animations — wagging tail, perking ears, head-tilts — were animated by Next Level Games’ character animation team using motion-reference footage of real puppies. The reference footage was shot at a Vancouver animal shelter where the studio’s artists volunteered.
  • Polterpup’s purple ghost-colouration was a deliberate design choice to differentiate him from the standard Boo white-and-blue colour scheme. The character’s art director Hideki Konno confirmed in a 2013 interview that Polterpup’s palette was chosen to feel "friendly and warm" rather than "cold and spooky."
  • In the Luigi’s Mansion 3 end-credits sequence, Polterpup is shown reuniting with Luigi’s entire family of supporting characters — Mario, Peach, the Toads, Professor E. Gadd — in the Last Resort Hotel’s grand ballroom. The credits sequence has become one of the most-shared Luigi’s Mansion 3 moments online.
  • Polterpup is one of the only Mario series characters whose physical traits are biologically impossible in real life — he is a ghost dog with no living counterpart. The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia (2018) notes this distinguishes him from other animal characters in the series.
  • Polterpup-themed merchandise has been continuously available through Nintendo’s official channels since 2014, including plush toys, keychains, T-shirts, and the 2019 Polterpup-shaped 3DS LL coloured shell variant (Japan-exclusive).
  • The character was added to Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (Switch, June 2024) with significantly enhanced model fidelity. The HD remaster’s Polterpup model has approximately 4x more polygons than the original 3DS version.
  • Polterpup has appeared in over 6 Mario series games to date, but only the three main Luigi’s Mansion titles give him a substantial role. His cameo appearances in Smash Bros., Princess Peach: Showtime!, and Mario Kart Tour are all brief Easter eggs rather than meaningful roles.
  • The character has been confirmed by Illumination to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) in a brief but significant supporting role alongside Luigi. The film’s pre-release marketing showed Polterpup in promotional artwork attached to Luigi’s character poster.
