General profile

Toadette is Toad’s pink-spotted female counterpart, an upbeat and treasure-loving inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom whose signature feature is her distinctive double-mushroom-pigtail headpiece. Introduced in 2003 as a Toad alternative for Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Toadette has grown across the past two decades into a fully-realised separate character with her own personality, biography, and role within the Mushroom Kingdom — distinct from the generic Toad species and from Toad himself. She is most often paired with Toad in spin-off games (where they form a doubles unit) or with Captain Toad (where she is his sister and treasure-hunting partner in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker).

Toadette’s appearance is distinctive among the Toad cast: a pink-spotted mushroom cap rather than the standard white-with-red-spots, two long braided pigtails of mushroom material that double as her hair, a pink dress with white trim, and pink-and-white boots. The pigtails are technically extensions of her mushroom cap rather than hair — a detail confirmed by Nintendo character designer Yusuke Akifusa in a 2014 character-design retrospective — making her one of the few Mario characters whose "hair" is actually fungal anatomy. Her overall design has remained essentially unchanged since 2003, with only minor proportional refinements in modern entries.

The mid-2010s saw Toadette’s role expand significantly: she became co-protagonist of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2014), the first major Mario series game built around exploration of small dioramas rather than traditional platforming; she was given a unique "Super Crown" transformation in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019) that turns her into the Peach-like character "Peachette," immediately becoming a fandom phenomenon; and she has since become a default playable character in nearly every Mario series spin-off, including Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) where she joined the playable mainline-platformer cast for the first time.

Quotes

"Yay! I love treasure hunting!" — Toadette, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
"Toadette! I am here!" — Toadette, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
"Help me out, hero! Hero!" — Toadette, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
"Oh no! I got captured again!" — Toadette, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
"Bring me a Super Crown! I want to transform!" — Toadette, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Enemies

Toadette has no recurring personal enemy beyond the general villain cast of the Mario series. In her solo appearances she contends with Wingo (the giant bird-villain of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker who repeatedly steals her power stars and captures her at the end of each book), the Madame Broode and Spewart bosses in the Treasure Tracker bonus chapters, and assorted boss creatures from Mario Party and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. She competes against the standard Bowser-camp roster (Bowser, Bowser Jr., Wario, Waluigi, Koopalings) in racing and sports contexts.

Friends

Toadette’s closest associates are Toad (her counterpart, with whom she shares many of her appearances), Captain Toad (her treasure-hunting partner in Treasure Tracker), and the broader Toad Brigade (Bluish Toad, Yellow Toad, Mailtoad, Hint Toad). She has warm relations with Princess Peach — in whose service she frequently appears — Princess Daisy, Rosalina, and the Mushroom Kingdom in general. In Super Mario Maker 2’s Story Mode she works alongside Mario, Luigi and Builder Toad as one of the four protagonist characters helping rebuild Princess Peach’s castle. Her relationship with Captain Toad has been variously characterised by Nintendo as "close associate," "treasure-hunting partner," and (in the 2014 game’s opening cinematic) "sister" — the last of which has been Nintendo’s official Western canon since 2014.

Appearances

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003)

Toad and Toadette in Mario Kart Double DashToadette debuted in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for the Nintendo GameCube as Toad’s newly-introduced doubles partner. Designed by Nintendo EAD’s character team and tasked with giving Toad a partner-character for the game’s two-rider gimmick, she was originally conceived simply as "female Toad" — but her cheerful, energetic personality (especially her bouncy character victory animations) gave her enough character distinction that she was retained in subsequent games. She and Toad share the small-character weight class and the Toad Kart vehicle.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2004)

Toadette in Paper Mario The Thousand-Year DoorToadette’s second appearance came in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for the Nintendo GameCube (2004), where she serves as the optional tutorial-guide and tattle character in the Rogueport sewers. She gives Mario advice on combat mechanics and runs an in-game help system available throughout the adventure. The 2024 Nintendo Switch remake of The Thousand-Year Door preserves her tutorial role and updates her character model with the modern Toadette design.

Mario Party series (2004–present)

Toadette joined the Mario Party series in Mario Party 6 (GameCube, 2004) as a default playable character. She has been a default in every subsequent entry: Mario Party 7, 8, DS, 9, Mario Party 10, Mario Party: Star Rush, Mario Party: The Top 100, Super Mario Party, Mario Party Superstars, and Super Mario Party Jamboree (Switch, 2024). She is consistently classified as a small-character weight type and shares her stat profile with Toad and Yoshi.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (2014 / 2018)

Toadette in Captain Toad Treasure TrackerToadette’s role expanded significantly in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Wii U (2014, with a Switch and 3DS port in 2018), where she is the deuteragonist alongside Captain Toad. The game opens with the two siblings hunting treasure together when the giant bird-villain Wingo swoops down and captures Toadette — setting up the game’s "rescue Toadette" through-line across its first "book" of levels. Books 2 and 3 reverse the formula, with Toadette becoming the playable protagonist while Captain Toad is the one to be rescued. The 2018 Switch port adds new playable bonus levels including a co-op mode where both characters can be controlled simultaneously by two players. Treasure Tracker established Toadette as a fully-realised separate character with her own playable role, ending nearly a decade of Toad-counterpart status.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2013 / 2021)

Toadette appears as a non-playable supporting character in Super Mario 3D World for Wii U (2013), where she hosts the Sprixie-rescued Toad House mini-games and gives Mario various rewards for completing them. She is also featured in the Switch port and the Bowser’s Fury expansion (2021), where she serves as the bonus-mode unlock host.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019) and the Super Crown / Peachette phenomenon

Toadette and Peachette in New Super Mario Bros. U DeluxeToadette became a playable mainline character for the first time in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch (January 2019). She is selected as one of the four playable characters — alongside Mario, Luigi, and Blue Toad — and gains access to a unique power-up: the Super Crown, which transforms her into "Peachette," a Peach-like form with floating powers and the ability to double-jump in mid-air. The Super Crown was an immediate cultural phenomenon — fan reaction online crowned Peachette "Bowsette" (a transformed-Bowser variant) and the resulting meme became one of the largest gaming community moments of 2018-2019. Nintendo officially acknowledged the Super Crown’s impact in the NSMBU Deluxe launch trailer.

Mario Kart series — Mario Kart 8 / 8 Deluxe / Tour / World (2014–present)

Toadette racing in Mario Kart 8Toadette has been a playable racer in every Mario Kart since her debut: Double Dash!! (2003), Mario Kart Arcade GP series, Mario Kart Wii (unlockable), Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Kart Tour, and Mario Kart World (Switch 2, 2025). In modern entries she is classified as a light-weight racer with high acceleration and handling but low top speed. Mario Kart Tour gave her multiple alternate costumes including "Tracksuit Toadette," "Chef Toadette," and "Festival Toadette." Mario Kart World for the Switch 2 features her among the default racers alongside her counterparts.

Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)

Toadette appears as the in-game quest-giver of Super Mario Maker 2’s Story Mode for Nintendo Switch (2019). She runs the "rebuild Princess Peach’s castle" framing device that ties together the game’s 100+ original levels, awarding the player coins for each completed task that go toward castle reconstruction. The game also features Toadette as a playable Mystery Mushroom costume.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)

Toadette joined the playable mainline cast of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Nintendo Switch (October 2023) as one of the twelve playable characters. Unlike Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and the Yoshis, she does not have a unique gameplay perk (no Wonder Effect transformation), but she does have her own unique voice clips and victory animations. She is classified as a "normal" character alongside Toad and Toadette’s other playable Toad variants.

Princess Peach: Showtime! (2024)

Toadette features in Princess Peach: Showtime! for Nintendo Switch (March 2024) as a supporting character in the Sparkle Theater’s backstage cast. She appears in the game’s opening cinematic alongside Toad and Captain Toad as one of Princess Peach’s travelling entourage.

Trivia & Official Sources

  • Toadette was designed by Nintendo EAD as a doubles partner for Toad in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003). Her design was approved in a single revision and her character profile has not been significantly altered since.
  • Toadette’s pink-spotted mushroom cap with pigtails is anatomically part of her cap rather than separate hair — confirmed by Nintendo character designer Yusuke Akifusa in a 2014 character-design retrospective. She is one of the few Mario characters whose "hair" is technically fungal.
  • Samantha Kelly has voiced Toadette continuously since 2009 (Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games). She also voices Toad, Princess Peach (since 2007), Birdo, and several other characters — making her one of the longest-running Mario series voice actors.
  • Toadette’s relationship with Captain Toad has been canonically described by Nintendo in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s 2014 opening cinematic as "sister and brother." This is the only sibling relationship in the Toad species to be officially acknowledged by Nintendo.
  • The "Super Crown" transformation introduced in New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019) sparked the "Bowsette" meme — a fan-created phenomenon in September 2018 that imagined a Crown-transformed Bowser. The meme was one of the largest gaming community moments of 2018-2019. Nintendo themselves acknowledged the impact in the NSMBU Deluxe launch trailer with a brief glimpse of fan art.
  • The Super Crown item works only on Toadette — it has no effect on any other character. Nintendo Treehouse staff confirmed in a 2019 Q&A that the item was "specifically designed as a Toadette-only power-up, not a general transformation tool."
  • Toadette’s favourite hobby, according to her Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker bio, is "exploring temples and finding treasure." This makes her one of the only Mario series characters with a stated hobby beyond their core role.
  • Toadette is a default playable character in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker’s entire second book of levels — Books 2 and 3 — making it the first mainline Mario series game where a female Toad character serves as the primary protagonist for half the campaign.
  • Her in-game height is approximately the same as Toad’s (officially listed as "Toad-sized" in Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. 2018), making her one of the smaller playable characters in the roster.
  • In Mario Kart Tour (2019–2025), Toadette had eight alternate costumes added across the game’s six-year run — the fourth-most of any female character (behind Pauline, Daisy, and Peach).
  • The Pix’n Love Encyclopedia Super Mario Bros. (2018) describes Toadette as "the most independent female Toad in the franchise," in reference to her growing role as a standalone playable character rather than as Toad’s adjunct.
  • Toadette’s appearance in Super Mario Maker 2’s Story Mode (2019) gives her over 200 lines of voiced dialogue — her largest single-game speaking role to date.
  • In Japan, Toadette is referred to as "キノピオレット" (Kinopiretto) in some Japanese promotional materials, formed by combining "Kinopio" (Toad’s Japanese name) with the diminutive feminine suffix "-retto." Her Western name "Toadette" was created specifically for the 2003 Double Dash!! localisation.
  • Toadette’s 2014 starring role in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker made her the third female Mario character to headline a major Nintendo platformer (after Princess Peach in Super Princess Peach, 2005, and Toadette herself in the Treasure Tracker bonus chapters).
  • The first Toadette amiibo was released in November 2014 alongside the Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launch — it is one of the few Mario series amiibo where the figure’s design (mushroom cap with pigtails) requires assembly during manufacture, due to the unique multi-part anatomy.
  • In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Toadette’s default voice clip "Toadette! I am here!" was a fan-favourite that has been used as a meme on YouTube and TikTok since 2017. Samantha Kelly has confirmed that the line was improvised during recording.
  • Toadette has been confirmed by Nintendo to appear in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (April 2026) in a supporting role alongside Toad and Captain Toad. Her voice in the film was not publicly named as of the film’s pre-release marketing in late 2025.
