Captain Toad’s defining enemy is Wingo — the giant bird-villain of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker who repeatedly steals the Power Stars he and Toadette have collected and kidnaps Toadette in the game’s opening cinematic. Wingo appears as the recurring boss at the end of each of the game’s three books. Captain Toad debuted in Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii as the leader of the Toad Brigade — a five-member rescue squad sent by Princess Peach to help Mario save the Power Stars from Bowser. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)
Captain Toad returns in Super Mario Galaxy 2 in an expanded role: he and the Toad Brigade run the Starship Mario hub, with Captain Toad serving as Mario’s recurring guide between galaxies. In this game he leads the Brigade on their own short adventure stints in the Deep Shell Well, Battle Brigade Galaxy, and Boss Blitz Galaxy. Super Mario 3D World (2013)
Captain Toad’s breakout role came in Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U (2013), where he appears in dedicated bonus levels titled "Captain Toad’s Adventures." These mini-stages — played from a fixed-camera angle rather than the game’s standard 3D third-person view — require the player to control Captain Toad through small dioramas, rotating the camera to find hidden coins and treasures while navigating without jumping. There are ten such Captain Toad levels in 3D World, each lasting approximately 2-3 minutes. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U 2014 / Switch & 3DS 2018)
Captain Toad headlined his own platformer in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, released for the Wii U on 5 December 2014 (Japan) and 5 January 2015 (worldwide). Directed by Shinya Hiratake and produced by Koizumi, the game expands the 3D World bonus-level concept into a full 70-level treasure-hunting adventure across three "books" of stages plus a fourth bonus book added in the 2018 ports. Captain Toad appears in Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Nintendo Switch (October 2023) in a supporting NPC role. Mario Kart series (2019–present)
Captain Toad has appeared as a playable racer in Mario Kart Tour (mobile, 2019–2025), where he was added in the Anniversary Tour in 2020. He was classified as a Top-tier driver with the unique special-item the Coin Box. In Mario Kart World for the Switch 2 (2025), he appears as a selectable Toad costume rather than as a separate playable character, in keeping with the game’s modular costume system.
Super Nintendo World theme park appearances
Captain Toad is one of the central characters of the Super Nintendo World theme parks at Universal Studios Japan (2021), Universal Studios Hollywood (2023), and Universal Epic Universe (2025). He appears as a walk-around costumed character at all three park locations and serves as the narrator for the "Yoshi’s Adventure" attraction.
