Birdo, known as Catherine (キャサリン) in Japan, is one of the most distinctive and historically complex characters in the Mario series cast. She debuted in 1987’s Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic — the Japanese game later re-skinned into Western Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1988 — as a recurring egg-spitting boss character. With her trademark pink-and-red bow, large round body, white belly, distinctive snout-like mouth, and ability to launch eggs from her mouth as both attacks and platforms, Birdo cuts an immediately recognisable silhouette. She has been a constant fixture of Mario series spin-offs since her 2000s revival, and is most often paired with Yoshi as his romantic counterpart or doubles partner.

Birdo’s species and personal history has been the subject of considerable franchise lore-tinkering by Nintendo. The original Super Mario Bros. 2 American instruction manual famously described her as "He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth" — a description that contemporary Western audiences found bewildering and that Nintendo has spent the subsequent four decades carefully revising. Modern Western canon (since approximately 2003’s Mario Power Tennis) treats her unambiguously as female, while the original Japanese material has always treated her as such; the awkward 1988 English-translation description is now generally understood by fans as a translation error rather than canon. The character is commonly referred to with female pronouns by Nintendo Treehouse and in all modern marketing.

Birdo’s defining gameplay trait — her egg-spitting attack — has been preserved and refined across her entire career. The eggs serve multiple purposes: in SMB2 they are projectiles she fires at Mario but can be caught and thrown back; in sports games they are her special-move animations; in Mario Strikers Charged they are her unique scoring mechanic. In her original Super Mario Bros. 2 appearance, Birdo was the recurring villain of every world — fought at the end of each of the seven worlds as a sub-boss before the final confrontation with Wart. Modern Birdo, having reformed since her 1988 debut, has no recurring personal enemy and plays a supporting good-or-neutral role in most spin-offs. She competes against the standard Bowser camp in racing and sports contexts. The original SMB2 Birdos appear in multiple colour variants — pink, red, and green — which led to her current colour-customisation legacy.

Birdo’s closest associate is Yoshi, with whom she has been romantically linked since their Mario Tennis doubles pairing in 2000. The two are frequently shown as a couple in spin-off material — most notably in Mario Power Tennis, Mario Party 7, and Mario Kart Wii. Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2 (1987/1988)

Birdo debuted in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic for the Famicom Disk System in 1987 — a Fuji Television cross-promotional game that Nintendo later re-skinned for Western release as Super Mario Bros. 2 in October 1988. Both versions feature Birdo as the recurring sub-boss of the game, appearing at the end of every world to fight Mario, Luigi, Peach, or Toad with her egg-spitting attack. The character was created by Kensuke Tanabe of Nintendo as part of the original Doki Doki Panic design and retained for the Western Mario localisation. The 1993 Super Mario All-Stars compilation re-released SMB2 for the SNES with updated graphics; Birdo’s design has been canonically based on the All-Stars version ever since.

Yoshi’s Story (1997) and Yoshi appearances

Birdo appears in Yoshi’s Story for the Nintendo 64 (1997, Japan) as a hidden character. Her relationship with Yoshi was first hinted at in this game — although they don’t directly interact, both Birdo and Yoshi can be unlocked through completion of the game’s hidden levels. Birdo also appears as a cameo in Yoshi’s Woolly World (2015) and Yoshi’s Crafted World (2019).

Mario Tennis (Nintendo 64, 2000) onward sports series

Birdo’s major revival came in Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 (2000), where she was added as a default doubles partner to Yoshi — establishing the now-canonical Yoshi/Birdo pairing. Since 2000 she has appeared in every Mario Tennis entry (Power Tennis, Tennis Open, Ultra Smash, Tennis Aces), every Mario Golf from Toadstool Tour onward, Mario Strikers series (Charged, Battle League), Mario Super Sluggers, and the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series.

Mario Kart series (2003–present)

Birdo joined the Mario Kart roster in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GameCube, 2003) as Yoshi’s doubles partner. She has appeared in every subsequent Mario Kart: DS (2005), Wii (unlockable), Tour (mobile, 2019–2025, with multiple colour variants including Red, Green, Light Blue, Orange, Yellow, Blue, White, and Black Birdo), and Mario Kart World (Switch 2, 2025). Mario Kart Tour’s colour-variant system gave Birdo more alternate costumes than any other character in the game.

Mario Party series (2005–present)

Birdo became a default character in the Mario Party series starting with Mario Party 7 (GameCube, 2005) and has been a default in Mario Party 8, Mario Party DS, Mario Party 9, Mario Party 10, Super Mario Party, Mario Party Superstars, and Super Mario Party Jamboree (Switch, 2024). She is classified as a Lightweight character in modern Mario Party entries with high acceleration and handling stats.

Super Mario Strikers / Strikers Charged (2005/2007) / Battle League (2022)

Birdo has played a notable role in the Mario Strikers football series. In Super Mario Strikers (GameCube, 2005) and Mario Strikers Charged (Wii, 2007) she serves as a Sidekick character whose unique skill set makes her one of the most effective egg-spitting strikers. Mario Strikers: Battle League (Switch, 2022) re-introduced her with new mechanics and a refreshed visual design. Her egg-shooting special move is one of the most distinctive in the series.
